Experience of the Week: Hobbiton Movie Set Tour

What is the experience?

Located on a private dairy farm, Hobbiton is a fully intact film set from the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film trilogies. Surrounded by lush dairy pastures and emerald hills, step into a world of fantasy.

As you wander the 12-acre site, you’ll be guided past Hobbit holes, the Mill, the Party Tree and the Green Dragon Inn. You’ll learn about how the set was constructed, and hear fascinating stories and anecdotes about the film trilogies for which the village was an important filming location.

Where is it located?

On a private dairy farm in the heart of the rich Waikato farming region, Hobbiton is at 501 Buckland Road, Matamata.

Who would enjoy this?

Adults and children alike who watched either the Lord of the Rings or Hobbit Films or anyone with a penchant for fantasy.

Thrifty Tours factoid?

It took film location scouts nine months to find the location for Hobbiton, and the set, consisting of 44 Hobbit Holes was constructed in secrecy with help from the New Zealand Army.
