Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers

Huge rivers of ice creeping slowly down from the high snow fields of the Southern Alps almost to the Tasman sea many kilometres away ...

The West Coast glaciers of Fox and Franz Josef are true natural wonders.  Giant cracking rivers of ice, born high in the Southern Alps and forced down, almost to sea level by the great weight of snow above, these glaciers can move at up to 10 metres a day and provide endless opportunities for adventure and exploration.  Take guided walks onto the ice, fly over the area for a spectacular view, or simply wander around the base enjoying the scenery. Only 23 km apart, the two glacier towns offer excellent facilities and information and sit below a National Park that includes New Zealand's highest mountains.  The surrounding forest and wildlife is superb, and the nearby coast a wild stretch of sand and surf.
