Nelson equals sun and beaches for Kiwis and is
considered the premier camping destination by many. Nelson township is a
fun and creative place with many excellent cafes, restaurants and craft
shops. The region produces some delicious fruit and orchards and vineyards
are plentiful. Scenic treats include the magnificent Nelson Lakes National
Park, with its deep blue lakes and skiing in winter, the Kahurangi National Park
over on the West Coast and the tropical beauty of Able Tasman National Park (see
separate section). The Takaka hills region is a limestone labyrinth
offering excellent caving and natural wonders such as giant sink holes and
'bottomless' springs. Nearby Golden Bay is a paradise of warm waters,
golden sands and beautiful native forest walks.
