Mt Cook

Mt Cook, or Aoraki (Sky Father) to the Maori, is a giant among many in a huge alpine park of granite, snow and ice

Mount Cook is known to Maori as Aoraki, or Sky Father. At 3,755 it is the highest peak in Australasia and towers far above the milky blue glacial waters of Lake Pukaki, in the heart of the MacKenzie Country. The Mt Cook National Park, a World Heritage Area, contains 22 of New Zealand's 27 highest peaks and is basically 700 square km of glaciers, snow and granite as well as an incredible area for alpine flora and fauna.
The luxurious Hermitage Hotel is a great place to enjoy the view, and there are a number of short walking trails that take you out into the alpine landscape from around the Mt Cook village.  The more adventurous can try heli skiing on Tasman glacier, mountaineering, flighseeing and guided walks.
